The Atonement

“Concerning the importance of the Atonement, in Alma we learn, ‘For it is expedient that an atonement should be made; … or else all mankind must unavoidably perish.’
If you have made no mistakes, then you do not need the Atonement. If you have made mistakes, and all of us have, whether minor or serious, then you have an enormous need to find out how they can be erased so that you are no longer in darkness.
‘[Jesus Christ] is the light and the life of the world.’ As we fix our gaze on His teachings, we will be guided to the harbor of spiritual safety.”
Boyd K. Packer, “The Atonement,” November 2012 Ensign

Becoming Perfect Before the Lord

“But we are subject to folly, to the weakness of the flesh and we are more or less ignorant, thereby liable to err. Yes, but that is no reason why we should not feel desirous to comply with this command of God, especially seeing that he has placed within our reach the means of accomplishing this work. This I understand is the meaning of the word perfection, as expressed by our Saviour and by the Lord to Abraham.

A person may be perfect in regard to some things and not others. A person who obeys the word of wisdom faithfully is perfect as far as that law is concerned. When we repented of our sins and were baptized for the remission of them, we were perfect as far as that matter was concerned.”

Becoming Goodly Parents

“Lessons taught in the home by goodly parents are becoming increasingly important in today’s world, where the influence of the adversary is so widespread. As we know, he is attempting to erode and destroy the very foundation of our society—the family. In clever and carefully camouflaged ways, he is attacking commitment to family life throughout the world and undermining the culture and covenants of faithful Latter-day Saints. Parents must resolve that teaching in the home is a most sacred and important responsibility. While other institutions such as church and school can assist parents to ‘train up a child in the way he [or she] should go’ (Proverbs 22:6), this responsibility ultimately rests on the parents. According to the great plan of happiness, it is goodly parents who are entrusted with the care and development of Heavenly Father’s children.”

L. Tom Perry, “Becoming Goodly Parents,” November 2012 Ensign

Gaining a Testimony

“The foundation upon which we have placed our faith is grand and glorious. I know this for myself. I had been in this Church but a short time when I succeeded in securing the most perfect knowledge that there was a God, that there was a Son, Jesus Christ, and that Joseph Smith was acknowledged of God as His prophet. It was a knowledge that no man could communicate. It came through a revelation from the Almighty. That is a very good starting point for a Latter-day Saint, and it is something that every person, who has any ambition at all to advance in this path, will need at some time or other. He will come into circumstances of such a nature that he will need strength, and that strength will come from a knowledge of the fact that the path in which he is traveling will lead him to the possession of his highest and best desires.

How Do We Show Our Love?

“On one occasion an inquiring lawyer came to the Savior and asked, ‘Master, which is the great commandment in the law?’ The Savior responded, ‘Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.’

How do we demonstrate to our Heavenly Father that we love Him? When Sister Monson and I were university students, there was a popular song that had words something like these: ‘It’s easy to say I love you, easy to say I’ll be true; easy to say these foolish things, but prove it by the things you do.’ We have a responsibility to prove to our Heavenly Father, by the things we do, that we love Him.”

Thomas S. Monson, “How Do We Show Our Love?”, January 1998 Ensign
